Lexmark International Moves 9,000 Users off Google G Suite onto Microsoft 365

With a globally distributed workforce of over 9,000 employees, Lexmark, a Kentucky-based provider of printing and imaging products and services, is doing business 24/7. Not only are employees collaborating with one another, but with a wide net of customers and partners. They are frequently sharing documents, files, and information, both inside and outside of the organization. As a result, the Fortune 1000 company cannot comprise its security posture.

That said, in 2018, Lexmark started to have concerns regarding the security of their existing technology platform, Google. Coupled with the desire to provide maximum workforce collaboration, Lexmark began researching alternatives to Google G Suite.

“All of our collaboration tools were on different platforms and there was no integration between them,” said Joe Young, Senior Manager, Enterprise Solutions and Integrations at Lexmark. “Our decision to move to the M365 suite of products was driven by our desire to bring our collaboration tools into an integrated platform. The icing on the cake was that the security tools were integrated with the productivity tools.”

After thorough exploration and analysis, Lexmark determined that Microsoft 365 could provide a more secure and modern IT environment. Microsoft’s platform also had the superior ability to increase workforce engagement and productivity. Additionally, moving to Microsoft would simplify and standardize Lexmark’s IT environment; thus, reducing internal costs, while providing standardized, value-added capabilities for their customers and partners.

As a result, Lexmark made the decision to cut ties with Google and move to Microsoft.

  • Lexmark would improve their desktop environment with a managed modern desktop powered by Windows 10 and System Center Configuration Manager.
  • The full suite of Office 365 would be implemented including Exchange, Office ProPlus, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams.
  • Increased security would be provided by way of the Enterprise Security + Mobility and the deployment of Azure Advanced Threat Protection, Azure Information Protection, and Advanced Threat Analytics.

But, migrating a global workforce in a cost effective and timely manner with limited business disruption is not easy. It takes the right team, the right tools, and the right methodology.

That is why Lexmark partnered with Blue Chip to successfully make the move from G Suite to M365.

"We selected Blue Chip as our partner after looking at a number of different vendors," said Young. "In our vendor selection process, Blue Chip demonstrated deep expertise in the Microsoft tools. That, along with their business process experience made Blue Chip stand out from the other vendors.”

As a company with global operations, Lexmark’s migrations needed to occur 24/7. Knowing that migrations would need to take place around-the-clock, Blue Chip selected BitTitan MigrationWiz as the ideal toolset to facilitate Lexmark's migration. MigrationWiz would allow Blue Chip to automate migrations, which, in turn, would reduce manual labor costs and shorten deployment times.

Over the course of several weeks, Blue Chip leveraged BitTitan MigrationWiz to complete a global migration, providing Lexmark with a secure and highly-productive M365 environment.

  • Migrated 9,000 mailboxes from Gmail to Exchange Online.
  • Performed 7,000 Windows 10 in-place upgrades from Windows 7.
  • Deployed Azure AD to secure identities.
  • Deployed Azure Multi-Factor Authentication / Self-Service Password Reset for single identity protection and password reset.
  • Implemented Office 2016, OneDrive for Business, Teams, and SharePoint.
  • Increased security via EMS Suite including deployment of Azure Advanced Threat Protection, Azure Information Protection, and Advanced Threat Analytics.
  • Increased identity management capabilities through the implementation of Microsoft Identity Manager.

Through strategic implementation of M365, Lexmark significantly improved their security posture and increased protection over their corporate data. They now have a modern workplace that supports their global workforce, giving them the ability to collaborate inside and outside the organization. Not to mention, consolidation to a single vendor will save Lexmark over $5 million in annual licensing costs.

In conclusion, the comprehensive implementation of Microsoft 365 has provided Lexmark with a secure, scalable, and collaborative IT environment for years to come.
